AMERICAN ODYSSEY:
THE AMERICAN WEST 2007

Offered each summer and alternating each third summer with the Alaskan Odyssey, this High Adventure Expedition has been the Hallmark Expedition for
AMERICAN ODYSSEY
Many North Carolina Teaching Fellows  and many others have participated in this "Awesome" Expedition of Personal Discovery as a Junior Enrichment Experience. 

A THIRTY DAY ODYSSEY OF PERSONAL DISOVERY THROUGH A TEAM ORIENTED, CAMPING EXPERIENCE IN THE AMERICAN WEST.

This Expedition has been offered with resounding success in
1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006

ALASKAN ODYSSEY WAS OFFERED during the  SUMMERS OF 2000, 2002, and 2005.

THE AMERICAN WEST EXPEDITION WILL BE OFFERED DURING THE SUMMER OF 2007.

Using the Outward Bound model, participants will have the opportunity to explore not only this Last Frontier of our country, but challenge themselves as well.  Many participants have discovered more about themselves on past American Odyssey Programs than they would have ever dreamed.  Although the trip is structured, with a definite itinerary, there is the opportunity to add many things to the trip or to customize it. 
American Odyssey Polar Bear Club Swims are a part of the experience as well as the Climbing, Rappelling, andStargazes.  A number of students have received college credit for this experience.

SOME OF THE PARTICULARS FOR THE 2007 EXPEDITION

WHO:  NC Teaching Fellows and other College Students.  In the last few years we have included some recent High School graduates and several High School students in their Junior and Senior years.  Age range 16-25.

WHEN:  The trip dates for 2007 are June 16th through July 15th   (30 Days).                            Departure will be from Landis, NC
     (More info upon Acceptance.)

NUMBER of PARTICIPANTS:  Min. 10/ Max. 40

NO PREVIOUS CAMPING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED!

PURCHASE OF SOME LIMITED CAMPING EQUIPMENT IS REQUIRED!
This includes:   Sleeping Bag and Pad.  See Website -What to Take  Equipment List

PROGRAM FEES AND DEPOSIT:
  The cost of the trip is $1,950
This is All Inclusive except for personal spending money, a National Parks Pass, and several meals.
AMERICAN ODYSSEY will split the cost of the National Parks Pass with you. Purchase the Pass with your name on it for $80 and we will give you $40 back.

RECRUITMENT DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE!

Teaching Fellows deduct the $250 that is escrowed from the Teaching Fellows' Scholarship. 
Teaching Fellows cost is $1,700
Monthly Payments of at least $500 are due beginning in January 2007.
If accepted after January, then payments will begin that month.
Balance of payments is due NOT LATER than May 1st  2007.

EDUCATIONAL FORMAT: The format of the experience is that of Experiential and Outdoor Education in a variety of outdoor settings including rural, remote, urban, suburban, and tourist settings.  There will be a strong concentration in the geological and earth sciences as well as astronomy.  Personal growth and awareness are hallmarks of this experience also.  The group will function as a family unit and will follow the Outward Bound Model. Grocery shopping, food preparation, route planning, support for each other, group challenges, celebrations are all shared.  Every effort will be made to ensure that each participant's experience is rewarding and that personal growth is realized.

COLLEGE CREDIT: Credit may be available for this trip.  Check with your advisor.
