LINVILLE GORGE BACKPACKING TRIP
The sailing/sea-kayaking trip to Beaufort, NC was a great success! We had 37
intrepid explorers in all, and the gusty winds did not prevent us from
enjoying the water and having a wonderful time together.
The next outing for the Venture Crew will be a multi-day hiking/camping trip
to Linville Gorge, in the mountains of North Carolina. We will depart on the
afternoon of Friday, Oct.5, arriving in the mountains in time to make camp and
get a good night's sleep. On Saturday morning, we will begin our
hiking/backpacking trip in the Linville Gorge Wilderness. The plan at this
time is to follow the eastern ridge-line, perhaps taking a single overnight in
the Gorge proper. We will be backpack camping on Saturday night and Sunday
night, and we plan to depart Linville around lunchtime on Monday. There will
be some optional rock-climbing and rappelling for those who are interested.
Prior experience in hiking, backpacking, camping, or climbing is not required.
The only camping gear required is a backpack (preferably an internal frame
pack), sleeping bag, a sleeping pad of some kind, and several layers of warm
clothing (including a waterproof shell-type garment). Tents, stoves, and other
group gear will be provided.
Many of the finer details such as exact departure/arrival times, our hiking
route and camping site(s) in Linville, and exact costs for the trip have yet
to be arranged. However, plan to leave mid-afternoon on Friday and return by
dinnertime on Monday. We might drive private vehicles (adult/chaperone
drivers) or rental vans (if we have enough participants), and this will affect
final cost. Meals for the weekend will cost ~$25, and transportation costs
could range from $10 to $30, depending on arrangements.
More specific details will be forwarded as soon as they are available,
definitely by the end of the week. However, please be aware that the nature of
this trip will require that some aspects of the planning will be fluid and
subject to revision/improvisation.
As always, if you have friends or family who might like to join us on our next
outing, please forward the info and have them contact me with any questions.
We always welcome new participants, and we are always in need of more
parents/adults as chaperones.
