EQUIPMENT LIST FOR 2009
YOSEMITE & TETONS-YELLOWSTONE
EXPEDITIONS
Getting to and from these experiences will most likely require that you travel by commercial aircraft.  Please make your experience as simple as possible by bringing as little as possible and carrying only one bag - Your Backpack!
Try to take it as a carry-on Bag if at all possible.

  • BACKPACK   Internal Frame Type.  Probably will need 4500 cubic in. - 6000 cubic in.
  • Sleeping Bag - Lightweight ~ 2-3 lbs. Coleman makes a great bag for about $40 and rating should be ~32 Degree
  • Sleeping Pad - Thermarest or Campmor brand or Ensolite or Z-Rest  www.campmor.com
  • Headlamp  Inexpensive @ Wal*Mart   $5 - $15
  • Hydration System - 2 Liter or 3 Liter   CamelBak is preferred over Platypus
  • Plastic Tarp 3x5 or 5x7  Most commonly Blue
  • Long Sleeve T-shirt  (AO provides you with one long sleeved T-shirt)
  • Short Sleeve T-shirt       Poly Dri-more shirts are ~$6 at Wal*Mart in the athletic wear section
         AO will have short sleeved shirts available for sale.
  • Long Pants - lightweight, quick dry
  • Shorts (2)  You could bring a pair of zip offs to be the pants and shorts.
  • Swimwear
  • Boots or Trail Runners for Backpacking
  • Bath Towel or Camp Towel
  • Fleece Pants  - can be worn inside your sleeping bag if needed
  • Fleece Jacket  - can be worn inside your sleeping bag if needed
  • Knit Cap or Balaclava - for very cool nights
  • Shell, Lightweight Wind / Rain Jacket with Hood
  • Teva or similar Sandals
  • Underwear
  • Hiking socks, sandal Socks
  • SUNGLASSES with headstrap for Whitewater Rafting
  • Nalgene Type water Bottle - Wide Mouth
  • Bowl
  • Cup or Mug
  • Spoon or Spork
  • Bandana
  • Gloves·-cheap Brown jersey gloves for Half Dome climb ~$1  Also, Cool nights.
  • Parachute Cord to use with your Tarp and for Clothslines.
  • Sunscreen - We can share - purchase when we get there
  • Insect Repellent - We can share - purchase when we get there
  • Mosquito Headnet for the high country.  Wal*Mart ~$2.
  • Lip treatment   Chapstick,Labiosan, Blistex, etc.
  • Dirty clothes bag  We can purchase Group Laundry Detergent to share.
  • Trekking Poles  Optional- May be difficult to carry on a plane - Staff can take out with us or purchase out there and Staff will bring them back to NC at end of Trip.  Wal*Mart ~$20. 
  • Wide brimmed Hat  - Sun / Rain Protection
  • Washcloth - could use a bandana!
  • Soap or body wash Please repack in sample bottles to reduce weight and volume.
  • Shampoo in Sample Bottles Or use Camp Soap for both
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste, Floss
  • Deoderant   Check out Lavilin Cream Deoderant Read Product Description.  I used this on my 42 Day 479 mile Backpacking Trip and only needed toapply it 4 times in six weeks. Destroys Odor Causing Bacteria.
  • Visene, Hand and body Lotion  - The Western US can be Very Dry.
  • Any Personal Meds and or Over The Counter Rx.

NOTE:  We Sleep under the Stars on our Tarps - Under our Tarps if it rains.
Summer in the Sierras, Tetons, or the Absaroka Range can be very chilly at night - even if it is very warm during the day.  We have had Snow on July 1st  before. 
If you have other Backpacking equipment that you want to bring - ask Dave first so we won't duplicate equipment.
REMEMBER - LESS IS MORE!!!!!!
Make each piece of Equipment serve Double Duty if Possible.

  • CAMERAS   Digital - and - Water Cameras. 
         Digital - Make sure you have a case for it.  Also, bring Ziplock Bag for protection.  Bring a Water Camera for             the time in Rivers with Whitewater Rafting the Snake River or Floating the Merced River as well as the                  Polar Bear Swims.  In the past we have stored all of our Digital Images on one Laptop and then burned                      everyone CD's or DVD's of all photos.

  • Personal ID - Drivers License, Student ID - College and High School
  • Spending Money  - Approximately $200  for each Trip unless you are a big spender. 
We have found that Debit and Credit cards work best. 
You can purchase Visa Debit Cards at Wal*Mart in $50 and $100 denominations.
  • Roll of Quarters for Laundry, Showers - Some are coin operated.
  • Journal and Writing Utensils - You will treasure this for years to come.
  • Addresses of friends and family
  • Stamps for postcards and letters.  We will be able to drop mail on several occaisions.
  • Footwear:  Teva-like sandals, and your boots. and don't forget....
Be sure to break in your Boots or Trail Runners well long before you leave to go on this trip. .

·Ladies  PLEASE limit your makeup if you use it. 
Remember things like Sports bras, scrunchies, monthly feminine needs, etc.
